House of Sushi on Polk Street offers an unpretentious spot for those craving straightforward Asian dining with an emphasis on sushi and Japanese classics. It’s a full-service restaurant where the vibe leans casual and approachable rather than sleek or trendy, making it a comfortable choice for both solo diners and groups looking for a relaxed evening.

The menu balances sushi rolls with hearty, cooked dishes like chicken teriyaki and tempura. Locals often highlight the bento dinner boxes that bring together sashimi, tempura, and other favorites alongside miso soup and salad — a convenient option that feels like a well-rounded meal rather than just sushi on its own. Expect to find Takoyaki and Chicken Karaage as popular starters, alongside generous rolls like the Dragon Roll and crispy tempura shrimp.

While some customers find the sushi rice on the softer side and occasionally feel the sauces on certain rolls (like eel sauce) can be heavy-handed, those who prioritize robust flavors in cooked dishes tend to walk away satisfied. The chicken teriyaki and salmon kama, in particular, get praise for their balance of flavor and well-executed cooking.

House of Sushi is best visited during dinner hours when the kitchen is in full swing and the atmosphere buzzes quietly with diners settling in for a comforting casual meal. It’s a good option for anyone who wants more than just raw fish — with ample choices for vegetarians, and those who enjoy both traditional and fusion-style Asian plates.

The interior is straightforward, focusing less on ambience and more on delivering solid food without fuss. For travelers and locals alike, it’s a solid neighborhood spot where the staff’s friendly hospitality creates a welcoming environment, especially when compared to more touristy sushi joints nearby.

Dinner started off strong with flavorful chicken and beef skewers, and the salmon kama was a highlight—perfectly cooked and delicious. The rolls were less impressive. The Rock & Roll and Spider rolls were drenched in eel sauce, which overpowered everything. I’m always a bit cautious when sushi comes heavily sauced—it feels like something’s being covered up. The sushi rice was also a bit soggy. The uni, saba, and hamachi sushi were all fresh and enjoyable, though the uni portions were smaller than expected. Bill came out to over $150. A little pricey for what we got, but with smarter ordering, I’d give it another try. 4 stars

We were in the area and saw this place- had a good feeling about it. Had to wait 30 minutes for them to open. It was worth the wait. Everything was delicious. Dragon roll and chicken teriyaki were out of this world.
